CONAMA Project: Collection, analysis, generation and publication of national information on solid waste in Chile

Since January 2005, by resolution No. 265 of the Council of Ministers of CONAMA, the country has a Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Policy (PGIRS), and an Action Plan, which runs until 2010. Among the specific objectives stated in PGIRS, it has been defined to: "Develop information systems for managing solid waste". Three specific lines of action accompany this objective:

Create a register of waste management facilities of all kinds.

  • Conduct studies on waste generation and management
  • Develop an information system with indicators

Chile is in the process to access the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). This condition imposes, with regard to the environment, a high standard to our public policies and the quality of our growth. This information is requested on a set of standardized forms for this purpose.

Thus, one of the remaining tasks within the process to access the OECD, which collaborates in parallel to the implementation of the Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Policy, is to promote the management of information on solid waste in Chile. In response, CONAMA has initiated a process to update the information system on solid waste. It is therefore necessary to have consistent information related to solid waste management at the national level and for that matter, it is necessary to generate a methodology to collect information and gather, analyze and generate data for time series from 2000 to 2008.

An important short-term objective is to have this information publicly available, for which it is also necessary to publish a first report of data on solid waste management in Chile during this year. In the medium term and under a second stage, the idea is to have a website (National Solid Waste Information System) that is easy to access and browse, and where possible to display graphic and alphanumeric data to disintegration levels established according to the OECD requirements.

General Objective

Strengthen and generate information related to solid waste nationwide.

 Specific Objectives

Create a methodology for the collection of data on solid waste in Chile

Collect qualitative and quantitative information related to solid waste at the national and regional level according to the forms established by CONAMA.
