Clay nanoparticles

A composite material of differentiated characteristics has been developed based on polypropylene and modified clays. It combines high mechanical strength with improved gas barrier properties with regard to oxygen and other types of gases.
The thermoplastic nanomaterial can be used in the manufacture of packaging with low oxygen permeability, an important property for packaging of perishable food.

Natural Polyphenols

A new process extracts polyphenols  from radiata pine bark and delivers polyphenol fractions of different molecular weight:
The low molecular weight polyphenols have applications as anticorrosive or antioxidant in the food industry.
The intermediate fraction serves as the main raw material for duroplastic resins, mostly as heat-resistant adhesives for wood.
The high molecular weight fraction of polyphenols with thermoplastic properties can be transformed through extrusion or injection.

Copper nanoparticles

A material based on nanoparticles of copper and a thermoplastic matrix, with surfaces that slows down and, in many cases, prevents the proliferation of microorganisms.

The possible uses are many and varied, from networks to aquaculture crops with antifouling properties to products with medical applications.

Biodegradable plastic container

A biodegradable plastic container for forest plantations, that goes with the plant from seed germination, growth in the greenhouse, to its final place in the future forest, without the need of transplantation.
Current practice uses polypropylene containers, which requires performing a transplant when taking the plant from the greenhouse to the forest site. The stress associated to the exposure of roots to the environment causes that 4-20% of the plants do not survive and must be replaced later.

Thermosetting resins

It is a self-lubricating composite material of high strength and low weight, based on an epoxy resin reinforced by nanotubes and carbon fibers. The main application is the manufacture of tools, molds and machine parts, for the profiling by rollers, lamination and wire drawing. Many other applications are possible.

Wood-plastic composites

The wood-composite material developed is based on  polypropylene or polyethylene and wood fibers. Virgen or recycled plastics and by-products form the forest industry such as sandpaper powder or sawdust can serve as raw materials.

Depending on the requirements of the application, the material properties are tailored in product lines of extrusion or injection. The main use of extruded materials is in the construction industry (floors and overlaying for the exterior, rainling and fences), while for the materials manufactured by injection, the applications are varied and focused on the packaging, fast food and furniture sector.
